The Ecowatt app: for responsible electricity consumption

As electricity consumption is expected to be tight this winter, the Ecowatt device has been designed to allow everyone to influence their electricity consumption in order to anticipate the risks of winter outages. When do you need to reduce your consumption, disconnect your electrical appliances? The MonEcoWatt website, now available as an application, supports you in this process. Ecowatt is a citizen-driven scheme set up by the French electricity network operator TEN, in partnership with the Environment and Energy Management Agency (Ademe). Already available for several years in some regions of France with the website MonEcoWatt (Brittany, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur), this service is extended to the whole territory through a mobile application now available.

Ecowatt presents itself as an electricity weather by informing in real time about the level of consumption of the French. The aim is to encourage individuals, companies and communities to limit their consumption, especially during targeted periods when the network is on (particularly in the 8-13 and 18-20 hours time slots). According to RTE, this is the only solution to avoid load shedding.

Among the recommended eco-gestures : the reduction of heating, the closing of shutters and/or curtains as soon as night falls or in case of absence, the reduction of public and private lighting, the postponement of the use of the most consuming electrical appliances...

Based on forecasts of electricity consumption by TEN, each day is color-coded:

  • green: ‘reasonable’ level of consumption;
  • orange: ‘high’ consumption;
  • red: ‘abnormally high consumption, with the risk of power loss’.

The Ecowatt website also offers a system of vigilance outage alerts ” to warn you of potential power and power outages in your area. L'mobile app offers users direct notification on their smartphones if an orange or red signal is sent 3 days in advance.

At 1er In December 2022, EcoWatt had 470,000 SMS subscribers and the app had been downloaded nearly 300,000 times, says the President of the TEN Executive Board, who encourages citizens to sign up for alerts or download the app. The incentive campaign was effective, as the Ecowatt app had 700,000 downloads on December 4, more than double the number at the beginning of the week.
