Chikungunya vaccination campaign in Mayotte

Faced with a high risk of chikungunya outbreak in Mayotte, a vaccination campaign targeted at the adult population at risk is being launched. This is indicated by an order issued on May 28, 2025 in the Official Journal, following a decision by the Minister of Health.

Santé Publique France reported on May 23 that the number of new chikungunya cases had doubled in a week in Mayotte.

After Réunion, Mayotte is facing a significant increase in the number of chikungunya cases and a “high probability of the development of the epidemic”, the decree states. The text states that a small part of the population is immunized, with the existence of “multiple factors favoring the proliferation of mosquitoes vectors of the disease in a post-cyclonic environment”.

Against this background, this decree announces a vaccination campaign targeting people aged 18 to 64 years with at least one comorbidity, in accordance with the recommendations issued by the High Health Authority. It also lays down the conditions under which it is to be taken over.

Vaccination may be carried out in places designated by the Director-General of the Mayotte Regional Health Agency (RHA): places where healthcare professionals and pharmacies normally practice. Pharmacists are allowed to practice it provided they have received specific training.

Vaccination in a pharmacy with a prior medical prescription is entirely covered by the Health Insurance.

The only product currently authorized for chikungunya vaccination is Ixchiq.

Please note

In Réunion, the use of the Ixchiq vaccine has been restricted since late April to people aged 18 to 64 because of serious side effects reported in people over 65.
