Does a student have to pay the housing tax?

Depending on the type of housing you occupy, as a student you may have to pay the housing tax.

Independent rental

You must pay the tax on the dwelling you occupy 1to January of the year, even if you are a stock exchange.

You make your own tax return

If you file your own tax return, the tax department calculates the tax exemption or relief that you may receive (relief, discounts, capping for income).

You are attached to your parents' tax home

If you are attached to tax centre your parents can request tax relief by contacting your public finance centre.

Attach your parent's last tax notice to your application.

  FYI : if your parents are phasing out of housing tax, you can also benefit from it.

Student residence

You are exempt from the residential tax if you live in one of the following residences:

  • University residence managed by Nails
  • Residence for student accommodation, managed by an organisation under the same financial and occupancy conditions as those of the Cous

You do not have to pay tax if you rent (or sublease) a roomfurnished a person who rents (or subleases) a part of their principal dwelling.

The tax is established in the name of the lessor for the whole dwelling, including the part rented or subleased in furnished.
