British nationals: what steps to take to stay in France?

Britons and their family members already settled in France before 1^er January 2021, beneficiaries of the UK's withdrawal agreement from the EU, can continue to stay in France without a residence permit and work there without a work permit until 1^er January 2022. All the rights acquired as European citizens are therefore maintained until that date.

Possession of a residence permit will be compulsory from 1^er january 2022.

You had the possibility to apply for a specific residence permit

by October 4, 2021.

You can also benefit from the withdrawal agreement but have not been able to make your request before October 4, 2021. This is the case if you are in one of the following situations:

• you become an adult after this date;
• family members arrive in France after that date;
• you were unable to make your request due to legitimate reasons (e.g. reasons related to your medical condition, force majeure, etc.).

In these cases, you need to get closer to your prefecture.

British national settled in France after January 1, 2021

If you settled in France after 1^er in january 2021, you must apply to the prefecture for a residence permit for non-european nationals.

British nationals settled in France after 1^er January 2021 are in fact subject to the provisions of ordinary law, except where they are members of the family of a British national settled in France before that date.
