Hair loss treatment: new information on finasteride 1 mg

The use of finasteride 1 mg is currently closely monitored at national and European level. ANSM publishes in this way a fact sheet This is in addition to the package leaflet in the medicine’s cartons for men who are taking (or being considered for prescription) this medicine to treat hair loss.

ANSM developed this fact sheet in consultation with patient associations and healthcare professionals gathered in October 2019.

Intended to be given by the doctor at the time of consultation and by the pharmacist at the time of dispensing, this card recalls:

• the expected benefits in relation to the risks associated with the use of this medicinal product indicated in certain less advanced forms of baldness in men aged 18 to 41 years;
• the value of giving each other a period of reflection before starting this long-term treatment;
• action to be taken in case of adverse reactions, including discontinuation of treatment in case of mood changes.

Adverse Effects of Finasteride 1 mg

• Sexual disorders;
• Psychological disorders;
• Other side effects (e.g. allergic skin reactions) are listed in the package leaflet.

What to do if you experience side effects?

• If your mood changes (feelings of sadness, anxiety, tiredness, difficulty concentrating...), stop your treatment yourself and consult your doctor;
• If you experience sexual dysfunction or any other side effects, tell your doctor promptly;
• If you experience any of the following symptoms (swelling of your lips, face, tongue or throat, difficulty swallowing or breathing), you should stop taking the medicine and contact emergency services immediately (15 or 18), as this may be an allergic reaction that may progress to anaphylactic shock.
