Avalanches: What are the flags to know?

In France, there are 3 colors of avalanche flags corresponding to 5 levels of risk:

• yellow flag:
  
  • low risk level (well-stabilized snowpack on most slopes);
  • limited risk level;
• yellow and black checkered flag:
  
  • Marked level of risk;
  • high level of risk;
• black flag: very high risk level (widespread snowpack instability).

European pictograms are also used in some stations to supplement or replace traditional avalanche flags.
