Bicycle: what are the mandatory equipment?

The facilities that are mandatory

• Two brakes, front and rear;
• An audible warning device at a distance of at least 50 meters;
• A yellow or white front lamp and a red rear lamp (night or day when visibility is insufficient);
• Retro-reflectors (retro-reflectors): red at the rear, white at the front, orange on the sides and on the pedals;
• The wearing of a certified retro-reflective vest is mandatory for all cyclists (and their passengers) traveling outside the built-up area at night, or when visibility is insufficient;
• The wearing of helmets is mandatory for children under 12 years of age, whether they are drivers or passengers;
• Passenger transport is only carried on a seat attached to the bicycle. If the passenger is under 5 years of age, this seat must be equipped with footrests and tether straps.

Recommended facilities

• Wearing a helmet that reduces the severity of head injuries in an accident;
• A danger retractor that encourages drivers to move away;
• Mirrors;
• Wearing light-colored clothing or a retro-reflective device at any time.

Practical tips

• Monitor the condition of your tires: a worn or poorly inflated tire holds the road less well and bursts much more easily;
• Avoid clothing accessories that are too long or destabilizing (scarf, shoulder bag...);
• Use trouser clips.
