The Law on Schools published in the Official Gazette

In particular, the law provides that school is compulsory from the age of 3 as of the beginning of the school year 2019. Attendance is nevertheless flexible in small sections and it is possible to temporarily waive the school obligation for 3-6 year olds attending kindergartens. Meanwhile, starting the 2020 school year, children aged 3 to 4 will have a mandatory medical check-up.

Among the other major innovations for the 2020s, this law affirms the obligation to train up to the age of 18. This obligation may take various forms (education, apprenticeship, vocational training, civic service, etc.).

Classes

Among the other measures contained in the law, the French and European flag, the currency

freedom, equality, fraternity

and the words of the national anthem must be displayed in each classroom.

Moreover, when a map of France is displayed in the classroom, it must also represent the French overseas territories.

Programs

The law also states that education in the environment and sustainable development begins in primary school with the aim of raising children's awareness of environmental issues and the ecological transition.

Freedom of conscience

This new text specifies that pressures on students' beliefs or attempts to indoctrinate them are prohibited in public schools, colleges and high schools, in their immediate vicinity and during any teaching activity.

School organization

Local public institutions of international education will be established. These establishments, which include schools, colleges and high schools, will provide teaching in French and foreign languages throughout school. They will issue bi-national or European diplomas.

Families

By allowing a choice between the terms father, mother or legal representative, this law also recognizes homoparenthood in administrative forms. At the same time, it strengthens control over the education given by families.
