More than 220,000 people are reported to have been raped, attempted raped or sexually assaulted every year in France. In 2018, however, the courts handed down only 966 convictions for rape and 4,631 for sexual assault. A law passed in 2018 aims to combat impunity for perpetrators.
The law of 3 August 2018 strengthening the fight against sexual and gender-based violence, known as , has consolidated the arsenal of law enforcement in this area.
