In France, voting is not compulsory. To consult citizens directly on the causes of abstention during the various elections, to learn more about their motives: these are the objectives of an online consultation organized by the National Assembly of 1er as of 31 October 2021.
Abstention has increased in the various elections by universal suffrage for thirty years. The increase was sharp in the general election, with a record high in 2017. It reached a historic peak in municipal elections in 2020. Finally, it was still very strong in the June 2021 departmental and regional elections (read more about Vie-publique.fr).
