After an experiment in seven departments (Drôme, Finistère, Loiret, Manche, Nord, Vendée and La Réunion), the prefects of all departments now have the possibility of asking certain controlled motorists in a situation of alcohol to settle in their vehicle an alcohol interlock test (EAD) as an alternative to a suspension of driving license.
This device, which may apply to persons with a blood alcohol level of more than 0.8 g/l, obliges drivers to drive only vehicles equipped with DAEs for 6 months (the court may decide to extend this obligation for a period of 5 years).
Reminder
The EAD prohibits the starting of the vehicle:
if the alcohol level is positive;
or if the start-up has not taken place within 2 minutes of the result of the check.
A DAE costs about €1,300However, it is at the expense of the motorist.
It is also possible to rent this equipment (for approximately €100 per month).
In all cases, the cost of assembling and disassembling the equipment on the vehicle used must be added to this price.
