While the General Code of Territorial Authorities (CGCT) sets out the criteria for the burial of coffins, what are the criteria for the burial of ballot boxes containing the ashes of the deceased? That is the question asked by a senator in the department.
In its response published on January 9, 2020, the Ministry of Territorial Cohesion and Relations with Local and Regional Authorities states that, for the burial of ballot boxes, article L2223-2 of the CGCT provides that cinerary sites have a colombarium or specific spaces.
Moreover, according to the Ministry, it is possible to bury the ballot boxes in the sanitary void of a cellar containing coffins (between the surface of the ground and the top of the last coffin buried) but also in the overall space of the cellar.
Finally, the ballot boxes can be buried in open ground or in a specific cellar (called a cavurn) whose dimensions can be adapted to store one or more ballot boxes, the code not providing for regulatory dimensions in these cases.
