The latest data from the Banque de France published in February 2021 show an exceptional fall in the number of over-indebtedness files filed for 2020 (-24%), linked to the COVID-19 health crisis. The decline in the number of cases has been a trend observed for several years (-9% per year on average between 2014 and 2019).
In 2020, 108,731 cases were submitted to debt relief commissions in metropolitan France and near 97% situations were found admissible (105,184 files). This number is down by 24% compared to 2019.
This survey on household over-indebtedness in 2020 gives a precise picture of the situation in France. It thus makes it possible to analyze the socio-demographic context and the characteristics of over-indebtedness, which are in line with a steady decline since 2015.
While the Banque de France establishes a direct link between this exceptional drop and the COVID-19 health crisis (including during lockdowns), the nature of the data does not allow us to analyze the reasons that led to this drop (read more about Vie-publique.fr).
