Driving licenses: a mutual agreement between France and the United Kingdom

The rules applying to holders of the British driving license residing in France differ according to the date of issue of the license, before or after the 1^er January 2021.

You reside in France and you hold a British driving license issued before 1^er january 2021. Your British license is recognized in France, it allows you to continue circulating. You do not need to apply for an exchange of your British license for a French license. However, if your license expires, is lost, stolen or deteriorates, or if you apply for a new category of driving license, you must apply for a new license. the website of the National Agency for Secure Titles (NSA).

You reside in France and you hold a British driving license issued after 1^er january 2021. Your UK license is valid for one year from your installation in France. During this period you must request the exchange of your British license for a French license on the website of the National Agency for Secure Titles (NSA). After this period, if you have not requested the exchange, you will have to retake the French test of the driving license. In case of expiration, loss, theft or deterioration, you must make an exchange request on the ANTS website.

British driving license holders traveling to France for a short stay (tourism or business) will be able to travel with their driving licenses, under the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic of 8 November 1968 to which France and the United Kingdom are signatories.
