Pass Rail for under-28s: a package for unlimited travel by TER and Intercités

Publié le 05 juin 2024 - Directorate for Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)

If you are between 16 and 27 years of age inclusive, you can purchase since June 5, 2024 a package allowing you to travel unlimited on regional trains (TER) and Intercités circulating throughout the territory, except between cities of Île-de-France. This device, which costs 49 € per month, is valid for your trips in July and August 2024.

All young people aged between 16 and 27 inclusive, regardless of their nationality, are eligible for the Rail Pass.

You can purchase them until August 31, 2024, at sncf-connect or trainline.

The Rail Pass allows you to benefit, for 49 € per month, from tickets in 2nde class:

  • on regional trains (B);
  • in the classic Intercities day and night (seating position).

In some areas, you can use your Pass Rail to travel on board motor coaches with the TER label.

As for the night Intercités, if you want to book a bunk (2nde class) you have to pay an extra 19,50 €. In addition, if you are carrying a bicycle you may have to pay an additional fare when booking tickets for certain journeys.

The Île-de-France region is not part of the scheme. Traveling between stations in the Paris region is therefore not eligible. However, Intercités and inter-regional TERs leaving or arriving in Paris and certain cities in Île-de-France (Versailles, Rambouillet, Mantes-la-Jolie, Longueville...) are included in the Rail Pass.

FYI

The following journeys are excluded from the Pass Rail system:

  • TGV;
  • RER and Transiliens in Île-de-France;
  • TERGV (Hauts-de-France region);
  • Ouigo conventional or high-speed trains;
  • Eurostars (Transchannel and Continental);
  • TGV France-Brussels, TGV Lyria, TGV France-Italy, etc. (all international bidding entities).

However, the Pass Rail is valid on TERs departing from or arriving at foreign stations subject to French tax (Basel, Geneva, Ventimiglia, Vallorbe).

Please note

Pass Rail is being tested this summer. A review of the device will be carried out subsequently.

How to use your Pass Rail?

When purchasing your Pass Rail on the sncf-connect or trainline websites, you must specify a valid date (between 1er July and August 31, 2024). The Pass Rail is valid for 31 consecutive days. If you specify the 1er July as the start date of validity, your Pass is therefore valid until 31 July inclusive; if you indicate 15 July, it will be valid until 14 August inclusive.

Then you can renew your Pass Rail on the same 2 websites at the end of its period of validity to continue to benefit, again for €49. The Rail Pass is not valid beyond August 31, 2024. If you buy it on August 17, for example, it will only be valid until the end of the month.

Even if you have a Rail Pass, you are required to reserve your seat on board the train which you wish to borrow. At the time of your reservation, you can indicate the number of your Rail Pass and thus benefit from a ticket at € 0 (or € 19.50 in case of reservation of a berth in an Intercity at night).

With your Pass Rail, you cannot:

  • make 2 trips from the same city in the same day;
  • book multiple trips taking place on the same day within the same time slot.

FYI

Rail Pass travel reservations are open as of June 5, 2024. You can therefore use it as soon as you buy it to book trips between 1er July and August 31, 2024 inclusive.

Please note

You can buy your Rail Pass before you turn 16 if you reach this age in July or August 2024, but its validity can only start on the day of your 16th birthdaye birthday.

If you are 28 years old in July or August, the last day of validity of your Rail Pass is anyway the day before your 28th birthdaye birthday.

The price of a Rail Pass is set at €49, even if you use it less than a month.

FYI

When checking the ticket, you must present your Pass Rail (on your mobile phone or in print), your ticket and your identity document.
