What is the condition for having a fire at home?

Fire in your home, in a fireplace or in a wood burning stove is regulated. The right to use a wood-burning heater (for its own use, as a back-up heater or as a main heater) depends in particular on the region in which one lives.
General case
You can make fire in your fireplace (with or without insert) or your wood stove if you meet the following 2 conditions:
- The cleaning is done in accordance with the local rules laid down by municipal or prefectural decree (these rules can be consulted in the town hall).
- Your condominium rules do not prohibit it.
In Île-de-France

Paris
Closed fireplace (fireplace with a powerful insert or stove)
You can make fire, as a main or as a backup heating, or for your pleasure if you meet the following 3 conditions:
- You respect emission and performance standards for new or existing equipment
- The cleaning is done in accordance with the local rules laid down by a municipal or prefectural decree (these rules can be consulted in the town hall)
- Your condominium rules do not prohibit it.
Open fireplace
You can make fire for your pleasure or as a back-up heating if you meet the following 2 conditions:
- The cleaning is done in accordance with the local rules laid down by a municipal or prefectural decree (these rules can be consulted in the town hall)
- Your condominium settlement don't forbid it.
Using your open fireplace as the main heating is prohibited.
Other sensitive area commune
Closed-fire installation (fireplace with insert or efficient stove)
You can make fire (main heating, supplementary heating, for your pleasure) if you meet the following 3 conditions:
- You respect emission and performance standards for new equipment
- The cleaning is done in accordance with the local rules laid down by a municipal or prefectural decree (these rules can be consulted in the town hall)
- Your condominium rules do not prohibit it.
FYI
for existing equipment, there are no emission and performance standards.
Open fireplace
You can make a fireplace for your pleasure or as a back-up heating if you meet the following 2 conditions:
- The cleaning is done in accordance with the local rules laid down by a municipal or prefectural decree (these rules can be consulted in the town hall)
- Your condominium settlement don't forbid it.
Using your open fireplace as the main heating is prohibited.
