Publié le null - Mise à jour le 09 août 2023 - Legal and Administrative Information Directorate (Prime Minister)

Do you want to transform your classic bike without electric assistance by equipping it with an electric motorization kit (battery, controller and motor) in order to move more easily? Before choosing between a wheel or pedal motor and settling your conversion kit, do you know the rules to follow to drive on the public highway? Service-public.fr remind you of them.

You can electrify your bike and ride on the public highway provided that:

  • its maximum power is 250 W;
  • its maximum speed is 25 km/h;
  • the assistance is triggered only on pedaling and is cut off when the pedaling stops. It is however allowed to set up a start-up assistance without the use of pedaling but it must not exceed 6 km/h.

Under these circumstances, it is unnecessary to register it.

FYI

Some cities (such as Bordeaux, Paris and Toulon) offer help with the electrification of a conventional bicycle. To inquire, please contact your town hall.
