Why a Science Day?

Organized by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation since 1991, the Fête de la Science offers events open to all (many activities are adapted to the school audience, from kindergarten to high school), free, inventive and fun. It is an opportunity to meet scientists from all fields, to discover the work of researchers, to share knowledge, to explore new knowledge to better understand science and its issues.

The objectives of the event are to:

  • fostering knowledge sharing and exchanges between researchers and citizens;
  • value the work of the scientific community;
  • facilitating access to high-quality scientific information;
  • to enable everyone to take greater ownership of the issues at stake in scientific developments and thus to encourage active participation in public debate;
  • discover the work of scientists and the professions that come from research;
  • raising public awareness of scientific culture;
  • stimulating interest in science, curiosity about scientific careers and creating vocations among young people.

The 2022 Agenda

After two editions very focused on digital and hybrid formats, due to the health context, the 31e This edition, sponsored by science journalist Jamy Gourmaud, is an opportunity to meet the public. The National Museum of Natural History (MNHN) in Paris will kick off on October 7 with a free, open-to-all event.

There are several programs that allow you to follow the event from home: a series of 15 live shows from the MNHN, hosted by Fred Courant of the Sorcerer's Spirit team and a special scientific program in partnership with the ARTE channel. The Ministry of Higher Education and Research is also partnering with digital media The Conversation France through a series of research papers on climate.

For the 7the year after year, a book from the “Sciences in bubbles” collection is produced in partnership with Science for all (National Publishing Union). It highlights, in the accessible and entertaining form of the comic strip, 11 subjects of university research conducted by PhD theses and each with a singular look. The book, which has 75,000 copies, is aimed at all audiences, especially families and young people. It will be distributed during the events, offered by the 350 partner booksellers and made available on loan in 16,000 media libraries, libraries and reading points, 11,000 documentation and information centers of colleges and high schools and 100 university libraries. An augmented digital version will be posted on the Science Day website as early as 7 October.

Participatory science is also in the spotlight with two projects: "Stories of Nature" is a participatory digital collection on ongoing environmental changes, based on objects and documents from the past accompanied by personal narratives. It is a project led by the MNHN and the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin; Project ePOP is a network collecting, in various forms, testimonies from citizens around the world who are facing the environmental crisis.
