2024 Energy Check: Claims Window to Open in July

Every year, the energy check is paid to the poorest households to help them pay their electricity, gas and home heating fuel bills. A decree issued in Official Journal on 5 may 2024, the eligibility conditions for energy checks issued this year were clarified. A complaint portal is due to open in July for households that have not received the energy check at the moment, while developments in their situation allow them to be eligible in 2024.

The energy check shall be awarded subject to resource conditions. Its amount, which is calculated based on your reference tax income (RFR) and the composition of your home, varies from 48 to 277 € per year.

For example, in 2023, eligibility for the energy check depended on your 2021 income (reported to the tax authority in 2022) and the composition of your household based on your home tax return.

The total elimination of the principal residence housing tax since 1er january 2023 prevented a mechanical establishment of a new list of beneficiaries of the energy check for 2024. It was therefore decided that households that benefited from the scheme in 2023 would also receive an energy check in 2024, in particular in order to maintain the automatic nature of sending energy checks.

For households eligible for the scheme this year for their situation in 2022 (income reported to the tax administration in 2023 and household composition), and which were not eligible last year, a portal will be set up in July to allow them to apply for the energy check. This concerns in particular:

  • young people who have entered the labor force (first-time registrants);
  • households with declining incomes between 2021 and 2022;
  • households born in 2022.

The energy check application portal will be available via the https://chequeenergie.gouv.fr until December 2024.

Please note

The energy checks were automatically sent from April 2 to 25, 2024, to those who had benefited from the scheme last year. They are valid until march 31, 2025 to help pay the energy bills (electricity, gas, heat, domestic fuel, wood...) and some energy works of the housing.

How do I use the energy check?

Once you have received your energy check, you can:

  • use it directly online and thus pay part of your energy costs to your electricity or natural gas supplier, or to your social landlord (for rental charges that include energy costs);
  • send it to your social lender or energy supplier by post (you can find its address on your latest invoice or schedule).

To have your energy check for the next few years deducted directly from your electricity or gas bill, you can request its pre-allocation:

  • either online ;
  • by sending your energy check by post to your supplier or social lender after checking the "pre-allocation" box on the document.

You will no longer receive your energy check by mail; in the spring, an email will simply inform you of the amount of your energy check for the year.
