Increase in energy prices: a strong impact on purchasing power despite subsidies

The increase in energy prices between January 2021 and January 2022 had a significant impact on the purchasing power of the population. An INSEE study examines the evolution of average disposable income compared to 2020 and observes the offsetting effects of the measures implemented by the government (tariff shield, energy check...).

Over the period of one and a half years from early 2021 to mid-2022, the average disposable income a lowered of €720 compared to 2020 mainly due to the rising energy prices. The most modest households have been most heavily affected despite income support measures and the introduction of tariff shields, notes the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) in its study of 19 December 2022 on rising energy prices (read more).
