Since 1er in may, the price of many packs of 20-unit cigarettes increased by as much as 20-90 cents.

Cigarettes, but also cigars, cigarillos and packets of rolling tobacco are affected.

Many brands reach the price of €11 for a package of 20 units, compared with 10,60 € or 10,80 € previously. In 2024, the €11 mark should be reached on all brands. The price of roll-your-own tobacco increases from 20 cents to €1.20, depending on the brand.

This increase, based on an indexation of tobacco tariffs to inflation, was provided for in the Social Security Financing Act for 2023, which changes the method of calculation. The tariffs now take into account the general price increase of the previous year, and no longer that of N-2.

For tobacco prices applicable since 1er  may 2023, see the retail price nomenclature manufactured tobacco published by the Directorate General of Customs and Indirect Taxes.

For the World Health Organization (WHO),

increasing tobacco taxes is the most effective and cost-effective way to reduce tobacco use

.

Reminder

Customs oversees the regulation of the tobacco trade in France. Only licensed tobacco suppliers may deliver tobacco products to tobacco suppliers. They are the only ones who can retail these products.
