Since November 2022, it was already possible to inject 14 vaccines in pharmacies from the age of 16, but a prescription was needed attending physician or his midwife. Now, pharmacists can both prescribe and give mandatory and recommended vaccines to people 11 years of age and older. So you don't have to go to your doctor for that.

Warning

immunocompromised people must still go to their treating physician for "live attenuated vaccines" (which consist of attenuated viruses or bacteria) such as measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, or BCG vaccine.

Which vaccines are affected?

The list of vaccines that are mandatory or recommended, in particular because of their profession or their state of health, and that may be prescribed and administered by pharmacists includes, inter alia, those against:

  • diphtheria;
  • tetanus;
  • polio;
  • seasonal influenza;
  • COVID-19;
  • measles;
  • mumps;
  • rubella;
  • Human papillomaviruses (HPVs), a vaccination that helps prevent infections with the most common papillomaviruses, which cause 70 to 90% of cervical cancers.
  • chickenpox.

To learn more about the mandatory and recommended vaccines, you can consult the Service-Public.fr : the vaccination schedule.

How much does it cost?

The rates are as follows:

  • €7.5 if you come to the pharmacy only to have the vaccine injected, and you have a prescription from a healthcare professional other than the pharmacist or the vaccine does not require a prescription for dispensing;
  • €9.6 for the prescription and administration of the vaccine by the pharmacist.

These fees to be paid to pharmacists are paid in part or in full in certain situations by Medicare when the vaccine itself is reimbursed.

Please note

not all pharmacists can prescribe and administer vaccines. They must meet a number of conditions, including training. People should check with their local pharmacy to see whether a vaccine can be prescribed and given, and whether an appointment is needed.
