Dental expenses are now less reimbursed by Health Insurance

Publié le 17 octobre 2023 - Legal and Administrative Information Directorate (Prime Minister)

Dental services are now covered by the Health Insurance at 60%, compared to 70% previously. If you have a health add-on, it will cover the remaining part of the expenses when the contract you have signed provides for it.

An order issued in Official Journal on 14 october 2023, policyholders were required to cover 40 % of the costs (on the basis of conventional rates) from 15 october, compared with 30 % previously, for dental surgeons' fees and dental procedures.

For example, for descaling, the conventional tariff is €28.92 :

  • previously, when the reimbursement rate by the Health Insurance was 70 %, the amount reimbursed was €20.24 and the amount remaining to be borne by the insured person was €8.68 (30 % of the tariff);
  • now, with the sickness insurance reimbursement rate set at 60%, the amount reimbursed is €17.35 and the remainder for the insured person is €11.37 (40% of the fare).

If you are covered by a health supplement and the contract you have signed provides for it, the latter will reimburse you for this cost.

Please note

the conventional rates are those on the basis of which the calculation is made for the reimbursement of a medical act by the Health Insurance. They differ depending on whether the medical procedure is done on an adult or on the permanent teeth of a child under 13.

Reminder

the Ministry of Health indicated last June that it wanted to increase the role of complementary bodies in oral health prevention policy:

  • increasing the level of their coverage of oral care;

  • by making them contribute more to measures that improve the prevention of oral diseases, together with an increased investment of the Health Insurance in this area (reimbursement by the Health Insurance of new preventive acts).
