The National Universal Service (SNU) targets young people between the ages of 15 and 17. Its objectives include promoting a business of commitment, strengthening national cohesion through social diversity and supporting young people in their personal and professional journey.

The National Universal Service is in two phases. The first is a 12-day cohesive stay in a different department than his own. Registrations are open since November 6, 2023 on the website www.snu.gouv.fr.

The dates of the proposed stays for the 2024 session are determined according to the school holidays:

  • for zone A: Monday 19 February to Saturday 2 March; Monday 15 April to Saturday 27 April;
  • for zone B: Monday 26 February to Saturday 9 March; Monday 22 April to Saturday 4 May;
  • for Area C: Monday 12 February to Saturday 24 February; Monday 8 April to Saturday 20 April.

Stays are also offered in June and July (all areas combined):

  • from Monday 17 June to Friday 28 June;
  • from Wednesday 3 July to Monday 15 July.

The stay of cohesion is free of charge. All costs are covered by the State: transport, food, activities and volunteer duties.

Reminder

the SNU is aimed at all young people aged 15 to 17 (high school students, apprentices, workers, school leavers, etc.).

Please note

the ‘classes engaged’ scheme, introduced in the beginning of the 2023 school year, allows for the organization of cohesive periods over school time from march 2024. An “engaged class” label is awarded to the second and first year classes of CAP by an academic committee according to pedagogical criteria (class project on a subject related to the environment, defense and memory, the Olympic and Paralympic Games...). The stay is carried out by all pupils in the ‘committed class’.

How does a stay of cohesion go?

An SNU center hosts about a hundred volunteers. During their stay, they participate in various collective activities, such as:

  • workshops on biodiversity protection;
  • visits to natural and cultural heritage;
  • simulated debates on business issues (gender equality, anti-discrimination, anti-harassment, etc.);
  • innovative sports activities (kitesball, ultimate...).

Volunteers can also learn:

  • first-aid measures;
  • how to assist in the search for a missing person;
  • ways of dealing with the effects of climate change.

Please note

the supervisors are adults who have previously received training adapted to the management of a stay of cohesion. They are permanently present in the reception center; one of them acts as health referent.

What is the 2nd phase of the SNU journey?

After the stay of cohesion, the SNU route continues in a 2e phase with of choice:

  • a short period of service (at least 84 hours or 12 days) in the context of a mission of general interest;
  • a longer commitment (between 3 months and 1 year) which can take different forms (volunteer, volunteer internationally, join the operational reserve of the armies or the National Police, become a volunteer firefighter...).

The mission of general interest may be carried out continuously or episodic during the year following the stay of cohesion. It must take place outside of school time or working time. Examples include:

  • participation in a mission of solidarity;
  • support to fragile audiences;
  • participation in a heritage restoration project;
  • the organization of a cultural or sporting event.
