Blood donation: EFS calls for mobilization ahead of May bridges

Publié le 16 avril 2024 - Directorate for Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)

The French Blood Establishment (EFS) is inviting all those who can to make an appointment now to donate. The aim is to limit the impact of May holidays and bridges on blood supplies.

May and its many public holidays represent a difficult period for the French Blood Establishment each year. Candidates for donation are clearly less available. However, it is important that blood donations remain regular and constant because the life span of blood products is limited: 7 days for platelets and 42 days for red blood cells. And every day of the year, patients need transfusions.

The EFS therefore invites you to donate blood as early as April, if you are able to do so. One self-assessment test allows you to check if you can. EFS health staff will confirm your eligibility during the pre-donation medical interview.

FYI

In general, to donate blood, you must:

  • be between 18 and 70 years of age;
  • be in good health and weigh at least 50 kg.

It also exists some contraindications (some stays abroad; a tattoo or a piercing recently done; having recently received a dental treatment or operation...).

Where can I go to donate blood?

The French Blood Establishment offers on its website mapping of fixed and mobile collection sites. You can perform a search based on the type of donation (blood, plasma, platelets) and the period of time you are available. The contact details and opening times of the collection sites are indicated.

The EFS recommends that appointments be preferred whenever possible. This reduces the waiting time and better manages the care of each donor.
