If you are European and come to work in France, you do not need a residence permit. However, you can request it in prefecture or prefecture if you wish. You must, however, have resources and health/maternity insurance.

The first 5 years of stay

You are concerned if:

  • you European,
  • and you are engaged in a professional activity (employed or not) in France.

You must apply to the prefecture where your home is located.

If your file is complete, you receive a reclaimed pending the prefecture's response.

Employee

  • Your valid identity card or passport
  • Your home: by any means
  • 3 photos recent identity
  • Health/maternity insurance certificates
  • Employment certificate issued by your employer

In case of involuntary cessation of your activity, you must justify maintaining your right to stay by providing the following:

  • A certificate of incapacity for work,
  • or a certificate of termination or a letter of dismissal, accompanied by a certificate of registration in Pôle emploi specifying the duration of your employment,
  • or a certificate of completion of a work placement accompanied, in the case of a work placement not related to the previous professional activity, by a certificate of termination or a letter of termination.

Non-employed

  • Your valid identity document or passport
  • Your home: by any means
  • 3 photos recent identity
  • Health/maternity insurance certificates
  • Business justification: all documents relating to the regular, effective and sustainable exercise of your activity, such as, for example, depending on its nature and the situation:
    • registration in legal registers (business and company registers or business registers),
    • membership of professional bodies and social security bodies,
    • insurance subscription
    • minutes of appointment,
    • professional lease
    • hardware purchase invoices
    • sales contracts, benefit contracts,
    • turnover declaration form,
    • book of receipts and purchases, etc.

In case of involuntary cessation of your activity, you must justify maintaining your right to stay by providing the following:

  • a certificate of incapacity for work,
  • or a certificate of follow-up to an internship, accompanied by a certificate of termination specifying the conditions for such termination, in the case of an internship not related to the previous professional activity,
  • or a certificate of registration in Pôle emploi and a proof of the period of exercise of the activity which has ended and of its cessation.

Issuance of residence card EU/EEA/Switzerland citizen is free.

The card is given to you by the prefecture or sub-prefecture where you submitted your application.

Employee

The card expiration date is the end of the employment contract + 6 months.

It may not exceed 5 years.

Non-employed

The card expiration date is the end of the expected professional activity+ 6 months.

It may not exceed 5 years.

The approach is the same as for the 1re request.

After 5 years

After 5 years legal and continuous stay in France, you can request EU/EEA/Switzerland citizen's residence card - Permanent stay - All professional activities.

This card allows you to attest that you have the right to live in France permanently, without any other conditions.

It makes your administrative process easier, since the administration will no longer have to ask you to prove that you have a job.

You are affected if you meet all of the following conditions:

You must apply to the prefecture where your home is located.

You are retired (including early retirement)

  • Your valid identity card or passport
  • Your home: by any means
  • 3 identity photos
  • 1 certificate of employment (including periods of involuntary unemployment duly recorded, periods of involuntary cessation of work and absence of work or stoppage for illness or accident) or 1 certificate of professional activity for the last 12 months
  • Health/maternity insurance certificates
  • Justification of your right to stay as an employed person for more than 3 years

You are permanently incapacitated worker

  • Your valid identity card or passport
  • Your home: by any means
  • 3 identity photos
  • Health/maternity insurance certificates
  • Proof of incapacity and your right to stay for more than 2 years as an employed person or proof of incapacity resulting from an accident at work or an occupational disease entitled to a pension from a social security body

You are a cross-border worker

  • Your valid identity card or passport
  • Your home: by any means
  • 3 identity photos
  • Proof of employment over 3 years (including periods of involuntary unemployment duly recorded, periods of involuntary cessation of employment and absence of work or stoppage for illness or accident) in another European country and the maintenance of your habitual residence in France (return at least once a week)

Issuance of the card EU/EEA/Switzerland citizen - Permanent stay - All professional activities is free.

The card is given to you by the prefecture or sub-prefecture where you submitted your application.

The card is valid 10 years. It is renewable.
