Business/professional residence card of a foreigner in France

You come to France to carry on a commercial, artisanal or liberal activity for a period exceeding 3 months. You can then request the residence card entrepreneur/professional.

Temporary residence card entrepreneur/professional allows you to work in France as a self-employed person for a period exceeding 3 months.

You are concerned if you wish to reside in the French territory to pursue a commercial, craft or industrial activity. It can also be a liberal activity.

Your activity must be carried out primarily. It must be registered either:

  • Trade Register
  • To Business Register
  • ToUrssaf: titleContent (for other independent non-commercial, craft or industrial occupations)

Your business needs to be economical sustainable. It must also provide you with sufficient means of livelihood.

Your activity must match your qualifications or professional experience.

Application Filing

You must submit your application to the prefecture or sub-prefecture of your home, within 2 months of the expiry date of your residence card. Find out more on your prefecture's website.

Documents to be provided

In all cases, you must provide the following documents:

  • Long-stay visa or valid residence permit
  • Certificate of nationality (passport, identity card, consular card)
  • Certificate of domicile less than 6 months
  • 3 identity photos
  • Certificate of payment of stamp duty (to be handed over at the time of issue of the title)
  • Medical certificate issued by theOfii: titleContent (to be remitted at the time of delivery of the security)

When company is created
  • Copy of the lease or sublease agreement mentioning the activity and possibly authorisation of the owner of the premises
  • Or copy of the home agreement
In case of takeover of a trading fund
  • Copy of the fund's sales promise or contract
In case of management hire
  • Copy of promise or management lease
  • Extract from the previous operator's trade and business register or business directory (less than 3 months)
  • Copy of lease on behalf of the owner of the land

Insertion into an existing commercial, industrial or craft activity

  • Justification of appointment or letter of intent of the body responsible for appointment
  • Extract of registration of the company in the register of trade and businesses (less than 3 months) or registration of the activity in the directory of trades (less than 3 months)
  • Copy of company statuses when inserting into a business
  • Company Tax Situation Slip (P237)
  • Company account certificate issued by theUrssaf: titleContent
  • Original and copy of employment contract if you are an employee
  • Any certified accounting evidence of the company's ability to earn you income at least equal to €1,678.95 monthly, if you are not an employee
  • Any evidence on the economic viability of the company-building project

Continuing a commercial, industrial or craft activity

To continue the activity created
  • Copy of Lease or Domiciliation Agreement
  • Company Tax Situation Slip (P237)
  • Certificate of insurance covering, depending on the nature of the activity, the premises occupied, the vehicle or any other property necessary for the activity
  • Income Tax Notice
  • If you are an employee, pay slips for the last 3 months or, in the absence of a tax notice, for the last 12 months
  • If you are not an employee, extract from the account book indicating your remuneration for the last 3 months or, in the absence of a tax notice, the last 12 months
To continue participating in an existing activity or company
  • Income Tax Notice
  • If you are an employee, pay slips for the last 3 months or, in the absence of a tax notice, for the last 12 months
  • If you are not an employee, extract from the account book indicating your remuneration for the last 3 months or, in the absence of a tax notice, the last 12 months

Liberal activity

Creation of a liberal activity

  • Certificate of Registration Urssaf: titleContent
  • Justification of the activity's ability to generate revenues at least equal to €1,678.95 monthly
  • Authorisation to practise or registration with the relevant order in the case of a regulated profession

Continuation of a liberal activity

  • Proof of continuing activity
  • Justification of resources from the activity at least equal to €1,678.95 monthly
  • Authorisation to practise or registration with the relevant order in the case of a regulated profession

Cost

You must pay €225 (stamp duty of €25 + tax €200) tax stamps.

Proof of payment of stamp duty and tax is required upon delivery of the card.

The card is valid for 1 year.

Application Filing

You must apply to renew your residence card at the prefecture or sub-prefecture of your home within 2 months of its expiry date. Find out more on your prefecture's website.

If you file your application after the deadline, except in cases of force majeure or presentation of a valid visa, you will have to pay, in addition to the cost of the card, a visa fee to regularise €180.

You must pay €225 (stamp duty of €25 + tax €200) tax stamps.

Proof of payment of stamp duty and tax is required upon delivery of the card.

Card Duration

At the end of 1re residence card, you can request the issue of a multi-annual residence card with a duration of 4 years.

If you do not meet the integration condition, the card will be renewed for 1 year.
