What is a mid-career medical check-up for an employee?

The employer has an obligation to protect the health and safety of the employee. To check whether the employee's health still corresponds to the position he occupies, a medical examination of mid-career must be organized. We're doing an update on the regulations.

This visit is for purpose to strengthen the prevention of the health at work taking into account age and health status of the employee.

It consists of:

  • Establish a stocktaking of adaptation of the work station with the employee's state of health, taking into account the risks to which the employee is exposed
  • Assess the risks of occupational disintegration taking into account the evolution of the employee's abilities according to his professional background, age and health status
  • Raising employee awareness the challenges of aging at work and at prevention of occupational risks

The mid-career medical exam applies to all employees having one of the following contracts:

The mid-career visit may be organized on the initiative of prevention and occupational health services (SPST) or the employer or the salaried worker.

The periodicity of this visit differs if a branch agreement is applicable to the company.

General case

This visit takes place in the calendar year in which the employee reached 45 years.

This examination can be arranged before age 45 at the same time as another medical examination. In this case, the occupational physician must examine the employee within 2 years before the year of his 45e birthday.

Branch Agreement

The branch agreement lays down the periodicity of this medical examination.

After exchange with the employer and the employee, the occupational physician may propose by written the following measures:

  • Fitting-out, adaptation or conversion of the work station (for example, limiting effort handling, removing work from height, lighting workstation mitigation noise, etc).
  • Organization of working time taking into account in particular age and health status of the employee (organization of working hours, adapted part-time work, etc.).
