Your situation

  • You're applying overseas
  • You reside in Portugal or Canada
Edit

You can apply to renew your passport without moving at the embassy or consulate if you meet all of the following conditions :

  • You still have your passport (it has not been lost or stolen)
  • You were at least 18 years old on the date of issuance of your current passport
  • Your passport is still valid or has expired for less than 5 years
  • You are not applying for a passport renewal to change your birth name or first name or gender
  • You do not apply for a 2nd passport (for business reasons or incompatible destinations)
  • You are registered to Register of French outside France and have your consular registration number (Numic) and your registered email address
  • You have a La Poste digital identity

Here are the steps the passport renewal process:

Step 1 - Know if you need to buy an electronic stamp

In most cases, especially if your passport has expired or is expiring soon, you will need to provide a "Français de l'foreigner" electronic stamp by an amount of €96. You have to buy this stamp on the internet:

Buy an electronic stamp "Français de l'foreigner" online

In this case, your passport will be valid 10 years from the time of its issue.

Warning

You don't buy an electronic stamp if you are in one of the following situations and agree that the new passport will keep the same expiry date as the old one:

  • There are only one or two empty pages left on your current passport
  • You change your last name (for example, spouse)
  • You changed your address
  • You renew your passport to correct an error made by the administration

You can request that the passport be sent to you by mail. But you have to be registered in the French foreigner register of the same country, have an email address and be able to transmit files via the Internet.

If you request the mail, you must provide at the time of filing, in addition to the necessary supporting documents, a postage-paid envelope purchased from the authorized service provider in the country. Inquiries should be made with the consulate to determine the authorized service provider, the size of the envelope to be provided and the postage required.

If you do not indicate anything at the time of filing, you will have to withdraw the passport instead of filing the file.

Step 3 - Prepare for passport payment

The passport costs €96.

You can pay in cash. Some consulates also accept payment by credit card, check or wire transfer. Consult the consulate's website to find out how to pay.

If it included a visa, it may be kept for the period of validity of that visa.

The passport is valid 10 years.

Other case

You must remove it personally at the place of filing and sign it on the spot.

It should be removed within 3 months after it has been made available. After this period, the passport is destroyed.

The old passport must be returned. If it included a visa, it may be kept for the period of validity of that visa.

The passport is valid 10 years.
