Coastal erosion: adaptation needed for 126 coastal municipalities

Over the past 50 years, around 30 km² of land has disappeared in France as a result of the retreat of the coastline. An order and an order issued in Official Journal in april 2022, introduce preventive measures in municipalities that could be affected by the increase in this phenomenon in the coming years.

By 2100, at least 50,000 housing units are expected to be affected. The Law of 22 August 2021 on combating climate change and building resilience to its effects has provided the framework for government action to strengthen prevention in coastal areas that could be affected by this risk of flooding.

The Ordinance of 6 April 2022 on the sustainable development of coastal territories exposed to the decline of the coastline and the Decree of 29 April 2022 specify the city planning framework and the list of municipalities particularly affected by this risk of erosion in the coming years (read more).
