Publié le 26 avril 2024 - Directorate for Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)

Whether you are already a cyclist or are wondering about this sport, Mai à vélo is an opportunity to discover all forms of cycling (MTB, BMX, city bike...). Various events (leisure, sport, tourism...) are organized throughout France during the month of May to promote the practice of cycling. The desire of the organizers of Mai à vélo is to show that, in addition to being beneficial for health and air quality, cycling can also be a source of pleasure and have many benefits in everyday life. Supported by the Ministry of Ecological Transition and the Ministry of Sports, and bringing together a collective of national actors from the world of cycling, this event is a unifying and festive approach. The aim is to bring together existing initiatives and encourage public and private organizations to propose new bicycle events in mainland France and overseas. Among the activities offered:

  • introduction to cycling;
  • races;
  • walks and hikes;
  • repair shops;
  • film screenings;
  • Bicycle scholarships.

How to participate in Mai by bike?

You can participate in an event or propose an activity.

  • To attend an event, see the platform maiavelo.fr. You can find the activity that best suits you by doing a search by date, city, department, region, by theme (animation, walk, workshop, competition...), by audience (children, family, seniors, sports), by level of difficulty and by type of practice (BMX, city, road, mountain bike, track...).
  • You can offer an animation on the platform as an association, club, public institution, community, school, company, private individual, group of friends... You can unite with local associations to coordinate and offer a complete immersion including several activities. The event must be accessible to as many people as possible and should ideally:
    1. be free of charge, and in any event not for profit or commercial purposes;
    2. be accessible to all, and if not, you must specify the level of difficulty.
  • You can register your organization (community, company, association, school...) at the Mai à Vélo activity challenge. The goal is for your group to cycle as many miles as possible during the month of May. Local and national rankings are established according to the type of structure, their size and the geographical area of activity.

Please note

Last year, 4,041 events took place across France as part of Mai by bike, and more than 15 million kilometers were covered by the 100,000 participants of the Mai by bike activity challenge.

When?

The 4e edition of Mai by bike takes place of 1er as of may 31, 2024.
