The order published in Official Journal of 21 April provides for the experimentation of a yellow phase on the pedestrian light intended to better identify the so-called “release” phase. The same type of experiment already exists in some cities in France (Strasbourg in particular), in the form of the countdown fire.

The yellow pedestrian light will be tested according to two scenarios:

  • a fixed yellow lamp;
  • a flashing yellow light.

In both cases, the yellow pedestrian light prohibits entry but allows the already engaged pedestrian to complete his crossing safely, while the red pedestrian light prohibits entry.

The device is tested for a period of 2 years in 7 cities in France : Metz, Nancy, Nantes, Nice, Strasbourg, Toulouse and Versailles.

The introduction of the pedestrian traffic light (green, yellow, red) should thus improve the understanding of the clearance time by motorists and make it easier for pedestrians to comply with the ban on the pedestrian traffic light. For the association Road prevention, the period in which

everything is red and creates a conflict zone

.

Please note

In agglomeration, 40% fatal pedestrian accidents occur on a pedestrian crossing.
