Publié le null - Legal and Administrative Information Directorate (Prime Minister)

Since 1er June 2023, Météo France publishes the

Why launch a Weather Forests?

Most of the metropolitan area is vulnerable to forest and vegetation fires as a result of climate change. 9 out of 10 fire starts are of human origin and most are triggered by recklessness. Météo France launches for the summer, with the support of the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Territorial Cohesion, the Météo des Forêts, a map showing every day the fire hazard level by department for the next day and the day after.

This weather indicates the level of fire danger with a scale of four colors, understandable by all:

  • green : Risk weak ;
  • yellow : Risk moderate ;
  • orange : Risk high ;
  • red : Risk very high.

Objective of the scheme: to inform and sensitize the French people to the risk of fires so that they adopt the right reflexes to avoid fires leaving, particularly in the identified sensitive areas.

How is it developed?

Weather conditions have a strong influence on the sensitivity of vegetation to fire and on the spread once the fire has been declared.The Weather Forests is established by Météo France based on observations and forecasts of several weather parameters (temperature, rain, wind force, air humidity) and the state of drought of vegetation.

How to avoid fire starts?

Fire and barbecue

I organize barbecues at home, on a terrace and away from the vegetation that can ignite.

Cigarette and cigarette butt

I'm throwing my butts into an ashtray. I don't smoke in the forest.

Works and sparks

I carry out my work far from the grass and dry grass and I plan a fire extinguisher at hand in case of fire.

Fuel storage

I store flammable materials and products (wood, gas bottles) in a closed shelter, far from my home.

What to do if fires start?

Alert

Witnessing the start of a fire, I give the alert by calling 112, 18 or 114 (hearing impaired) and try to locate the fire.

Protect yourself

I take cover in a brushed house while waiting for the rescue. The car is not a safe shelter because it could burn.

Get informed

I remain informed of the situation and follow the instructions of the emergency services or the town hall.

Forest Weather does not report on ongoing or upcoming fires

When the risk of fire is high, prefectures may restrict or prohibit access to areas exposed to vehicles and pedestrians. Barbecues, fireworks or any use of fire may be prohibited. Spark-generating agricultural and forestry work can be regulated or even prohibited.

Failing to comply with the prevention instructions issued by the public authorities exposes you to a fine of 4e class of €750.

Find out more on the website of your prefecture or town hall.

Reminder

if you witness a fire start, notify the 18 (fire brigade), the 112 (European number) or 114 (emergency number for the deaf or hard of hearing) and locate the start of the fire by indicating the address (or if possible, use geolocation via a mobile phone.
