Family book: issue at birth of first child

A family register shall be issued to unmarried parents on the occasion of the birth of their first common child. Its content and the conditions for its issuance are regulated.

Born in France

The family register issued at the birth of 1to child contains:

  • extracts of birth certificates of the parent(s),
  • the child's birth certificate,
  • information on family law: marriage, filiation, adoption, parental authority, etc.

Parental information

Parent information is provided if:

  • the parent appears in the child's birth certificate,
  • the parent's birth certificate is held by a french civil registration officer.

Otherwise, the page of the booklet that concerns the parent will not be filled in.

Child information

Information about the child is recorded if his birth certificate is held by a French civil registry officer.

When there are more than one child, the information is given in the order of birth.

Terms

The booklet is issued only if a French authority holds:

  • the birth certificate of the child,
  • and that of at least one parent.

The authority holding birth certificates depends on the place of birth of the child and his parents.

Born in France

The town hall of the place of birth holds the certificate.

Birth abroad

The Central Registry Office in Nantes holds the certificate.

Approach

The family register shall be drawn up:

  • automatically when birth declaration,
  • or on request in the case of the birth of a lifeless child if the parent or parents do not have a booklet.

Who shall I contact

Warning  

if you adopt a child as a single, you must be provided with a family record when transcribing the adoption judgment on civil registration.

The family register shall be sent:

  • by mail to the home of the parent or parents,
  • or at the home office of the parents who can remove it on presentation of their ID.

Please note

the delivery time depends on the processing time of each civil registry office concerned by the booklet, to which must be added the delivery times.

Issuance of the booklet on the occasion of the birth of a 1to child is free.

Any change related to the civil status of the persons entered in the booklet must be the subject of a updating..
