From a certain age, called age limitHowever, you can no longer be retained in office and you must be retired. However, in certain situations, you can continue your professional activity beyond the age limit. We present you with the information you need to know.

You're a public servant

The age limit varies depending on whether you are a civil servant or active category or sedentary.

What is the age limit?

The age limit is 67 if you are a sedentary civil servant.

The removal of the frames shall be ordered the day after 67e birthday.

However, in some cases, you can apply for permission to continue working beyond the age of 67.

In what cases can you work beyond the age of 67?

You may be allowed to continue working beyond the age of 67 and up to 70 years, mainly in the following cases:

You can ask to work until you are 70

You can apply for permission to remain in office until age 70, regardless of your situation.

If your employer authority refuses you this authorization, it must give reasons for its refusal.

To be kept in business, you must be physically fit to continue working.

You must send a written request for postponement from the age limit to your employer administration at least 6 months before your 67e birthday.

Your employer administration must inform you of its decision at least 3 months before your 67th birthdaye birthday.

You have one or more children

You can ask to continue your activity beyond the age of 67 if you are in one of the following situations:

  • You still have one or more dependent children at age 67. You can work, in this case, 1 additional year per child at the expense without the extension of activity exceeding 3 years total. The children you consider are those for whom you receive family benefits or those entitled to Disabled Adult Allowance
  • You were parent of at least 3 children alive at age 50. You can work, in this case, 1 additional year. This increase in the age limit can be combined with the previous one if one of your dependent children at 67 years of age has a disability at least equal to 80% or is entitled to Disabled Adult Allowance
  • You are a parent, or you have raised and maintained, one or more children who died for France. You can work in that case 1 additional year per child deceased.

Your employer administration cannot refuse you permission to continue your activity on any of these grounds.

However, to be kept in operation, you must be physically fit to keep working.

You must send a written request for postponement from the age limit to your employer administration at least 6 months before your 67e birthday.

Your request must indicate the reason for which you are requesting this deferral and be accompanied by the relevant supporting documents.

Your employer administration must inform you of its decision at least 3 months before your 67th birthdaye birthday.

Your career is incomplete

You can ask to work beyond 67 if you do not have enough liquidatable quarters to benefit from a pension at the maximum rate of 75% your last raw index treatment.

Liquidatable quarters are the quarters actually paid in the retirement pension.

Periods of retention for incomplete careers are taken into account in the constitution and settlement of your pension rights.

You must send a written request deferring the age limit to your employer administration at least 6 months before your 67e birthday.

Your request must indicate the reason for which you are requesting this deferral and be accompanied by the relevant supporting documents.

Your employer administration must inform you of its decision at least 3 months before your 67th birthdaye birthday.

The removal of the frames is pronounced the day after the day of 57e, 59e or 62e birthday.

However, in some cases, you can request permission to continue working beyond the age limit applicable to you. unless you are an air traffic controller.

The age limit for air traffic control engineers shall be 59 years, no possibility of deferral.

FYI  

If you are integrated, as a result of a statutory reform, into a body or framework of sedentary category jobs (whose age limit is set at 67), you can apply to retain the benefit of the age limit of your former active category job, if you have completed at least 15 years of service in an active category job.

You can apply to work until age 67

You can apply to be kept in business until age 67.

This extension of activity up to 67 years of age may be granted to you after application of the possibilities for extending the age limit which may be granted for the following reasons:

  • Activity extension one year per dependent child if you have one or more dependent children when you reach the age limit applicable to you without the extension of your activity exceeding 3 years in total
  • Activity extension one year if you were a parent of at least 3 children living at age 50
  • Activity extension for incomplete quarry

This activity extension is granted subject to your physical fitness to keep working.

You cannot request an extension of the age limit if you are on long-term or part-time medical leave.

And if, during your period of extended activity up to 67 years, your condition justifies your placement on long-term or sick leave, part-time for therapeutic reasons or your reclassification for physical incapacity, your extended activity is terminated.

You're then removed from the executive and you're retired.

Periods of continued employment up to 67 years of age are taken into account in the constitution and liquidation of your pension rights and may be eligible for the premium.

You must formulate your request for extension of activity at least 6 months of the age limit applicable to you.

Your employer administration shall acknowledge receipt thereof.

Your application must be accompanied by a medical certificate prepared by an approved medical practitioner who has demonstrated your physical fitness for the job you hold.

The doctor may ask your employer's administration for any useful information relating to your working conditions and matters related to your position. You also receive all the documents sent to the doctor.

You, and your employer administration, can cchallenge the conclusions of the medical certificate in front of the medical board. If your employer administration refers the matter to the medical board, it will inform you.

Your employer’s administration will notify you of its decision at least 3 months before the age limit applicable to you.

In not responding to your request for more than 3 months, your employer administration is implicitly considered to have given its consent at your request. You can ask your employer's administration to issue you a certificate of authorization for the continuation of activity.

When the medical council is seized, your employer’s administration shall make its decision within one month of the opinion of the medical practitioner.

Until the administration makes a decision, you remain in office.

If you become physically unfit for duty during the extension period, the extension period shall be terminated.

FYI  

You can reverse your decision and apply for your retirement before age 67. You must submit your application at least 6 months before the date you wish to cease your activity.

You're contractual

The age limit is set at 67 years if you are a contract worker.

The withdrawal of staff shall be ordered on the day following 67e birthday.

However, in some cases, you can apply for permission to continue working beyond the age of 67.

Please note

If you are a preventive doctor or a contract doctor, the age limit is 73 years.

You may be allowed to continue working beyond the age limit mainly in the following cases:
