Verified 23 septembre 2020 - Directorate of Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister), Ministry of Justice

The filiation of a child within an unmarried couple is not automatically established. It is done differently with regard to the father and the mother. Where the mother's name appears on the birth certificate, the maternal relationship shall be established. However, before or after the birth of the child, the father must make an acknowledgement of paternity.

The father (like the mother) can recognize his child before birth.

Recognition can be done in any town hall by presenting the following documents:

  • Proof of identity
  • Proof of domicile (or residence) of less than 3 months.

The registrar shall immediately draw up the act of recognition. He gets the parent to sign it. He shall provide him with a copy of the document to be presented at the birth declaration..

The act of recognition shall mention the names and forenames of the parents.
