Bicycles: traffic rules to be respected

Publié le null - Directorate for Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)

Cycling requires the driver to respect the Highway Code. In order to guarantee the safety of everyone, cyclists must follow certain rules, in town or outside town and day and night. Service-Public.fr remind you of them with the Road Safety Delegation.

The general rules for cycling are as follows:

  • Do not carry earphones, earphones, or headphones, and do not hold the phone;
  • Do not drive after drinking too much alcohol. Above 0.25 mg/l of exhaled air, it is prohibited and punishable by a fine;
  • The helmet is mandatory for children under 12 years of age, driver or passenger of a cycle. He must be tied up.

Please note

it is forbidden to wear to the ear any device capable of emitting sound (earphones, headphones or headset). The use of the handheld telephone is also prohibited. In case of non-compliance with this rule, you are liable to a flat-rate fine of € 135.

In town

  • Take the paths or bike lanes that are dedicated to you;
  • If the roadway is bordered on either side by one of these reserved lanes, you must use the right lane, in the direction of traffic, and follow the traffic lights at the crossroads;
  • If there are no bike lanes or strips, you must drive on the right side of the road and move away from parked vehicles on the right side of the road, by a distance necessary for your safety;
  • Do not drive on the sidewalks. Only children under the age of 8 are allowed to do so provided they are driving at a reasonable speed and do not disturb pedestrians;
  • Cyclists are allowed to ride on greenways, meeting areas or areas 30, unless otherwise provided by the municipal authorities;
  • Park your bike in reserved areas or on the road; parking on the sidewalk is possible if it does not pose a danger to other users and does not hinder traffic;
  • In pedestrian areas, walk at pace;
  • In meeting areas, do not drive more than 20 km/h and respect pedestrian priority;
  • In the zones 30 and the meeting zones, the bicycles can circulate in both directions. The double direction allows you to benefit from better visibility, avoid major roads and simplify routes;
  • If you are in a group, drive in pairs or in single file. Always place yourself in single file at night, in case of overtaking of vehicle or narrow road.

Outside built-up areas

  • Do not drive too close to the shoulder to avoid ruts and chippings;
  • In the bends, tighten to the right as much as possible because the cars only see you at the last moment;
  • Be particularly careful when passing a truck: the air call may unbalance you;
  • In a group, drive in pairs or in single file. At night, in case of overtaking by a vehicle or when circumstances so require (narrow road, etc.), systematically take a single line;
  • In a group of more than 10 people, split.
