Launched in 2020, the United Nations (UN) has set 29 September as the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste. An estimated 17% of global food production is wasted (11% in households, 5% in food services, and 2% in retailers). Reducing food loss and waste is essential to ensuring food security for all, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, conserving natural resources (land, water, energy) and improving food quality.

The national pact to combat food waste sets the goal of reducing food waste to 50% by 2025 in France.

Useful resources on combating waste

In France, 10 million tons of food are wasted per year throughout the production chain. Each of us wastes about 50 kg of food a year when eating at home, in a restaurant or in a canteen, or the equivalent of a hundred meals! By changing our behaviors, we can reduce food waste and environmental impacts.
