The new measures concern pupils at different levels: those at 6e, first-level and vocational high school students. For the latter, the new features are part of the more general reform of vocational high schools, which should be implemented gradually from the start of the 2023 school year.

The new organization of the 6th grade

From the beginning of the 2023 school year, all students of 6e will benefit:

  • a weekly hour of support or deepening in French or mathematics;
  • support for homework, through the ‘Homework done’ mechanism.

The weekly hour of support and deepening

The hour of support or deepening in French or mathematics is included in the 26 hours of compulsory instruction for pupils of 6e.

For each pupil, the teaching teams identify the knowledge and skills for which enhanced learning is necessary. They do this from the annual progress markers of CM2 and 6e. Support hours will provide additional time for students to master concepts that have been a challenge for them.

The in-depth hours will be an opportunity for students to work differently from the elements of the French or Mathematics of 6 programe. For example, they may find other ways to solve mathematical problems, experiment with writing longer texts, or confront more complex readings. However, it is not a question of them discovering the program of 5 in advancee.

At least every quarter, the content of the support and deepening sessions needs to be revised to allow pupils to benefit from different learning opportunities throughout the year, according to their needs.

These hours of support and deepening are mostly provided by French and mathematics teachers, as well as by school teachers.

Extension of support to homework

The "Homework done" system, which has so far been optional, becomes compulsory for all pupils of 6e, in order to facilitate their entry into the college and enable them to become more independent when they perform personal work. “Homework done” offers students, within their school outside school hours, a period of study to complete some or all of their homework. They work alone but can be helped when they need it.

The number of hours and organizational arrangements are determined by the head of the school according to the needs of the pupils.

Generalization of mathematics in the first-general class

Mathematics is taught at 1:30 a week in the core curriculum for all first-class students who have not chosen this subject from their three specialties.

Eliminated by the Baccalaureate reform, mathematics had been reintegrated into the core curriculum of general first lessons by the 2022 academic year, but as an option.

This teaching should enable pupils to acquire knowledge and mathematical skills useful for their social and professional life (statistics, probabilities, data processing, etc.).

Reform of the professional route

Several developments are taking place at the level of the vocational high school. In particular, the terminal year is changed. Two courses will be offered to high school students according to their professional project:

  • for those who wish to enter the professional world upon graduation, the duration of traineeships is increased by more than 50 %;
  • for those who wish continuing their studies after graduation, four weeks of intensive courses of general and vocational adapted courses are planned. The goal is to equip them with the skills they need to succeed in higher education.

In addition, from the beginning of the 2023 school year, the State will pay a traineeship allowance: to high school students who are preparing a vocational diploma at secondary level (CAP, vocational baccalaureate, additional mention, certificate of crafts); and to high school students engaged in complementary training of local initiative (CFLI) after a CAP or a vocational baccalaureate.

It will amount to:

  • €50 per week for vocational high school students enrolled in 1re year of CAP and in the second year of the vocational baccalaureate;
  • €75 per week for vocational high school students enrolled in 2e year of CAP and the first year of the vocational baccalaureate;
  • €100 per week for vocational high school students enrolled in the final stage of the vocational baccalaureate.
