Road safety: 2021 mortality decline

The 2021 road safety record shows a relatively low rate of road fatalities. Accidents and road fatalities statistics are compared with 2019 figures given the particular context of 2020. But the results observed in the overseas territories differ from the general trend.

In 2021, 2,944 people were killed in metropolitan France after a road accident, including 1,414 motorists. There were 208 more motorists killed in 2019 in metropolitan France.

The second wave of lockdowns, travel restrictions and the closure of nightlife venues in the first half of 2021 had the effect of reducing road mortality. This is revealed by figures from the National Interdepartmental Road Safety Observatory (ONISR) in the 2021 Road Safety Review, which was published on 1er June 2022 (read more).
