An order published in Official Journal of 18 january 2023 confirms the return of compulsory mathematics education to the beginning of the 2023 school year for all high school students in the general education sector from the first class. Further measures to reconcile all pupils with mathematics, to encourage gender equality and to promote excellence are foreseen in the new strategy for 2023-2024.

In order to strengthen the common training of students in mathematics, starting in 2023, all first-general students who have not taken the math specialty will have a mandatory hour and a half of math classes per week.

Bringing math back into the mainstream is part of a strategy that places 2023 as “the year math is promoted in school.” The plan includes a number of measures to “reconcile all students” with math and “promote gender equality.”

In primary school:

  • Continuation of the mathematics training plan for teachers in schools, including those in nursery schools, with the training of all teachers within four years (30% already).

At the college:

  • Encourage the creation of a math club in each college starting in the 2023 school year;
  • Establish small groups in class of 6e in mathematics, both to support pupils in difficulty and to stimulate the most advanced pupils;
  • Create a national framework of competences in mathematics (CNCM) on the model of the European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) to certify the level attained by each pupil at the end of 3e.

In high school:

  • Create a reconciliation module with mathematics in the second class in each high school (general and technological high school and vocational high school) in the fall of 2023;
  • Make First Class Mandatory general one and a half hours of math for all students who have not chosen the math specialty.

To combat gender stereotypes and encourage gender equality, actions to promote and enhance scientific guidance among young girls will be implemented in schools. The aim is to achieve gender parity in expert mathematics, physics-chemistry and mathematics by 2027 and to move towards gender parity in other scientific subjects: engineering, digital and computer sciences.

Reminder

Eliminated by the 2019 Baccalaureate reform, mathematics was reinstated as an option in the core curriculum of the 2022 academic year. Optional, an additional 1h30 of math per week is available for first-class students who have not chosen the math specialty.

Please note

Since 1950, 13 Fields medal winners have been French, making France the 2nde Most rewarded country after the United States. However, a significant number of students leave the school system without having the necessary mathematical skills: 25% of students do not have the level expected in mathematics at the end of the class of 3eHowever, 70% of students who go to vocational high school have a low level of mathematics.
