Free contraception for women under 26 years of age since 1 January 2022

In order to facilitate young women's access to contraception, full coverage of the costs of contraception from 1er january 2022 includes all women up to the age of 26, not just minors. This measure is provided for in the Social Security Financing Act for 2022 published in Official Journal of 24 December 2021.

The extension of free contraception to young women under 26 is motivated by the decline in contraceptive use, often linked to financial reasons.

Since 1er January 2022, the Health Insurance 100% and without advance payment, the cost of contraception and related procedures (annual consultation with a doctor or midwife and potential laboratory tests).

In practice, young women under the age of 26 can access free of charge doctor's or midwife's consultations, examinations or medical procedures in connection with contraception as well as different types of contraception on prescription in pharmacy without paying a fee (hormonal pills of 1era or 2e generation, hormonal contraceptive implant, IUD, hormonal emergency contraception).

3 million young women are affected by this measure.

Please note

Until 1 January 2022, free contraception was available only to underage women. Contraception has been free for girls aged 15-18 since 2013 and since January 2020 for girls under 15.

FYI  

This does not include internal and external condoms (female and male), spermicide creams, patches, vaginal rings, and 3-pack pillse and 4e generations.

Warning  

Since 1er in january 2023, emergency contraception is free and available without a prescription in a pharmacy for minors. For adults, it is available in pharmacies without a prescription and 100% paid for on presentation of the Vitale card (or a certificate of entitlement) or the card of the medical aid of the State (AME).
