The campsite can be practiced in isolation or on a ground specially equipped to accommodate tents, caravans, mobile homes in particular. The operator of a campground must inform his clients of the rental conditions, the rates and the rules of procedure. Wild camping is prohibited in some places.

In a landscaped plot

A campground may be classified under the heading Tourism or Leisure..

  • The Tourism applies where more than half of the pitches are for overnight, weekly or monthly rental for a transient clientele.
  • The Leisure applies where more than half of the pitches are for a rental of more than one month, by a customer who does not live there.

There are 2 categories of campgrounds classified: star campsites (from 1 to 5 stars) and campgrounds natural area

Star campsite

The number of stars awarded (from 1 to 5) depends on the comfort of the equipment and amenities, the services provided to the clients, the accessibility and the sustainable development.

A classified campground shall display in the reception office or at the entrance to the campground the following information:

  • Number of locations tourism and leisure, distinguishing, if necessary, the number of places naked, caravans and motorhomes, great comfort caravan, caravan comfort, light recreational homes and mobile recreational residences and the number of parking spaces in the motorhome parking area
  • Plan of the land, showing, if applicable, the numbered locations
  • Priced
  • Rules

A campsite classified as a "natural area" shall display the following information in the office of reception or at the entrance to the campsite:

  • Total number of locations
  • Plan of the land, showing, if applicable, the numbered locations
  • Priced
  • Rules

Campsite "natural area"

Campsites natural area are subject to specific rules. They are small structures located in the middle of nature with less demanding standards of equipment and comfort than those of star campsites. They can only accommodate tents, caravans and motorhomes. The pitches and the accommodation must not be individually served by water or connected to the sanitation system. These campsites are open only 6 months per year maximum, continuous or not.

A classified campground shall display in the reception office or at the entrance to the campground the following information:

Labels may be awarded to a campground, in particular:

  • European Ecolabel, symbolized by a flower, means that the campsite has implemented a number of actions in the environmental field.

  • Label Tourism & Handicap is granted to campsites hotels offering a reception and services adapted to the needs of people with disabilities

Ministry of Economy

Prior to the conclusion of any lease, the operator must communicate in writing to its future customer certain information , including:

  • Administrative information on the campsite (name, address, website, classification...)
  • Description of accommodation (type, size, maximum capacity in number of persons, accommodation accessible to disabled people...)
  • Location and environment of the campsite
  • Common facilities located on the campsite (washing machine, swimming pool....)
  • Lease price for the period
  • Prices of additional services or supplements not included in the rental price (water, electricity, rent of sheets, accessories for children, supplement for car...)
  • Conditions of rental (booking fees, possibility of cancelation insurance and cost...) and various restrictions (smoking ban...)

  FYI : if the campsite is located in an area subject to a foreseeable natural or technological risk, the client must be informed of the planned alert and evacuation arrangements.

Prices are free.

Rates must be displayed at the entrance or in the campsite reception desk.

The original of the detailed invoice must be delivered to the camper.

The municipality can ask holidaymakers staying in their territory to pay a tourist tax..

Each campsite must have a set of rules of procedure, drawn up in accordance with model-type ..

The rules of procedure must be posted at the entrance to the campground and in the campsite reception desk. It must be given to any client who requests it.

Damage

Some property risk insurance cover damage to camping equipment and personal effects, for a limited amount.

The camper must check that the off-home furniture guarantee plays for the campsite.

There are also assurances campsite or leisure, including both the guarantee of civil liability (for damage caused) and that of damage to camping equipment (for damage suffered).

If the camper is not or is insufficiently covered, he may ask his insurer for an extension of warranty.

  Please note : if you camp abroad and get sick, certain precautions are necessary.

Damage to others

Certain contractsliability insurance cover fire damage to property of others.

The camper must check that his insurance covers risks outside his home and that it does not exclude camping.

There are also assurances campsite or leisure, including both the guarantee of civil liability (for damage caused) and that of damage to camping equipment (for damage suffered).

Wild campsite

Wild camping, i.e. camping in isolation and off a landscaped lot, is allowed on condition that the owner of the land agrees, but in some places it is prohibited.

General prohibitions

Camping is prohibited, even temporarily:

  • On roads and public roads
  • In classified or pending natural sites
  • In listed heritage sites
  • Near historic monuments
  • On the shores of the sea
  • Less than 200 m from water points used for drinking

  Warning : these prohibitions apply even if the land is not a public place.

Local bans

The practice of camping outside the campgrounds may be prohibited by the mayor in any public area. The prohibition may be temporary or permanent. It may be taken for environmental, commercial, aesthetic or public safety and health reasons.

The public shall be informed by:

  • And by a sign placed at the usual access points of the prohibited zone
