Why elect parents who represent you?

School boards and school boards are forums in which representatives of parents of pupils can be involved in the life of the school, in conjunction with other members of the educational community.

The elections of these representatives are a highlight of the school year because they settle a real link between families and the school in order to build a relationship of trust.

What are the election dates?

They take place every year before the end of the 7e week of the school year in each school: primary school, middle school and high school. In 2023, they will be held:

  • Friday 13 October or Saturday 14 October;
  • on Friday 29 September or Saturday 30 September in Mayotte and La Réunion, taking into account the school calendar of these two academies.

FYI

The memo of june 29, 2023, published in Official Gazette No 27 of 6 July 2023, sets the dates for elections to school boards and boards of local public educational institutions.

Who can be representing parents of pupils?

To become a parent representative, you must:

  • exercise parental authority on a child attending school in the establishment where the elections are held;
  • be registered on a list of electors.

The list of electors must be sent to the election office or school head at least 10 days before the elections.

Once elected, parents' representatives can take part in the life of the school. As such, they are present at the various councils and are in contact with members of the educational community.

Who can vote?

To be able to vote, parental authority must be exercised over the child attending school (it is not mandatory to have French nationality).

Both parents are eligible voters and have one vote, regardless of the number of children enrolled in the same school.

Voting is personal (without power of attorney) and secret. Parents can vote on the spot by going to the institution on the day of the vote, or by mail by sending the ballot before the closing time of the poll.

Please note

the elections are part of the school democracy week. The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness of election issues, particularly by encouraging parents to run. During the week, elections for representatives of parents of pupils are held on the school board and on the board of directors, as well as elections for the councils of delegates for high school life (CVL). This year, it runs from October 9 to 14, 2023.

FYI

From this year the elections of the parents' representatives on the board of directors local public educational institutions under the Ministry of National Education are possible through electronic channel. That's what a decree published in the Official Journal of 23 August 2023.
