Read, write, count: new measures for CM1, CM2 and 6th

Publié le null - Directorate for Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)

The Minister of National Education has introduced new measures for grades 1, 2 and 6e as of the 2023 school year, in a circular published on January 12, 2023. In order to remedy the decline in the level of French, a daily dictation is recommended in particular. Update on these provisions with Service-Public.fr.

Strengthen the mastery of basic knowledge (reading, writing, counting) of pupils in CM1, CM2 and 6e (cycle 3) to facilitate their entry into the college: this is the message delivered by the Minister of National Education at the beginning of the year in a note published in the Official Gazette national education, youth and sport. Its objective is to indicate the pedagogical priorities in cycle 3, which concerns these three classes. The emphasis is on French, whereas a significant drop in the average level has been observed for several years.

Dictation and reading

The purpose of the circular is to identify the teaching priorities in cycle 3 at the level of fundamental knowledge in order to facilitate entry into the college:

  • master the French language and language in all disciplines: decode, understand, write, speak;
  • calculate and resolve problems.

In order to become proficient in the language, the note states that students must automate grammar, spelling and conjugation rules. To do this, “regular training through exercises of all kinds, including short daily dictation, is essential.” Handwriting must be the subject of daily practice.

Reading is another important focus. At the beginning of CM1, students should be able to read a text fluently at a speed of 90 words per minute. Specific daily practice support, over a period of 4 weeks, is planned to ensure that all students achieve this. At the end of CM2, the reading must be able to take place in an average of 120 words per minute.

FYI

In the fall of 2023, CM1 students will spend national assessments in French and mathematics. This will provide pedagogical benchmarks for teachers and help address identified difficulties more quickly.

Please note

In CM1 and CM2, at least two hours will be devoted to reading and writing every day and this program will have to integrate into all disciplines in 6e.

Consolidate entry in 6th

Class of 6e is also strengthened in terms of fundamental knowledge:

  • Starting in the new school year 2023, consolidation and deepening sessions will be put in place for all students of 6e in French and mathematics, with the intervention of teachers from schools;
  • The "homework done" scheme, which is available at the college on a voluntary basis, will be made compulsory for new schoolchildren. It aims to empower pupils and reduce inequalities in learning. Only 44 per cent of students are currently participating in the program;
  • Following the model of the springboard classes (already experienced), a weekly hour of academic support or deepening of knowledge in mathematics or French, provided by teachers from schools or colleges, will be integrated into the schedules of all classes of 6e.

Please note

Cultural and sports activities are strengthened with the extension of the collective share of the Culture Pass in 6e and 5e and the generalization of the 2 hours of weekly sport.
