Social Security registration for an employee who arrives in France

Verified 02 October 2019 - Directorate for Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)

On a 1to employment, registration procedures at Social Security are to be done in certain situations. It is handled by the employer, with some exceptions. Once you have been registered, a personal and final number is assigned to you, called a social security number.

Your registration is to be asked if you are in one of the following 2 situations:

  • You have never been registered with Social Security (for example: in case of birth abroad)
  • You do not have any documents proving your registration (vital card, certificate of rights, old paper social security card)

In general, you don't have to do anything about your Social Security registration. Your employer will take care of it, in the 8 days preceding your hiring.

However, you must apply for registration yourself if:

  • Your employer did not ask for your registration
  • You work for multiple employers
  • You work occasionally or intermittently for the same employer
  • You have a foreign employer

You must submit your application within 8 days of being hired by the CPAM: titleContent from your home.

Who shall I contact

If CPAM finds that you are not registered, for example during a check, it can take care of it directly.

If registration is accepted, you will receive a registration card: a paper certificate in a 1to time, then the computer map, called Vital card..

This card allows you to justify your affiliation to your CPAM: titleContent and your entitlement to benefits.

The card shall mention your social security number..

Even if notification your registration comes after you are hired, it takes effect as soon as you are hired. So if you start working on October 1 and receive your registration on October 10, the registration is valid on October 1to October.

If registration is refused, you can challenge the refusal decision with the social security courts..
