Transition from school to middle school (CM2 to 6th)

Verified 18 March 2024 - Directorate for Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)

Your child is at CM2 and you wonder about his passage in 6e ? At the end of the class of CM2, the council of masters decides on the continuation of your child's schooling: passage in 6e at the college or, exceptionally, repetition. Here is the information to know about the transition from school to college.

Step-by-step approach

You must fill in the registration form in 6e of your child.

This document is given to him in CM2, before the spring holidays, by his teacher or the school director.

In particular, you must specify here your choices on the following topics:

  • Diet student (day school, half-board, boarding school)
  • 1re foreign language from a choice of languages taught in 6e
  • Optional Options (e.g. regional language or culture)

If the college proposes it, you must also specify whether you want your child to enter a class of 6e fitted out. This is a class offering a 2nde anticipated living language, a school sports section or adapted timetables.

The completed file must be given to the teacher.

Then the teacher will send it to the Dasen: titleContent.

FYI

A student with a disability may also be guided by the CDAPH.

At the end of 3e quarter, the board of masters shall meet.

The board is composed of the school principal and the teachers in the class.

It takes one of the following policy decisions:

  • Passage of your child to middle school
  • Repeat. It may be pronounced when a pedagogical support device has not made it possible to put an end to the major learning difficulties of a pupil.

The pupil of CM1, for whom a class jump has been decided, is also concerned.

The principal of the school will notify the decision on your child's school record book.

If you are in disagreement with the board's decision, you have 15 calendar days (from receipt of the decision) for appeal.

To do so, you must file an application written, through the school principal, before the departmental appeal board.

This committee shall be chaired by the Dasen: titleContent. It includes inspectors responsible for the constituencies of 1er degree, school principals, teachers of the 1er degree and parents of pupils. It must also be composed of at least one school psychologist, a doctor of National Education, a principal of college and a teacher of the 2nd college teaching degree.

You can ask to be heard by this commission.

The board can decide whether your child will move to the upper class or the class jump.

If you disagree with the appeal board's decision, you can refer the matter to the National Education Ombudsman.

The steps differ depending on whether your child goes to 6e or double.

Transition to 6th

You receive an assignment notification in the sector college. You must then complete the steps college enrollment.

Repetition

Your child is re-enrolled in the school he attended.

Repetition is accompanied by specific educational measures for the pupil (e.g. personalized educational achievement program).
