Nursery reception

Verified 12 mai 2020 - Directorate for Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)

Information of families on available places

The law on the acceleration and simplification of public action provides for the creation of a single family information service enabling them to know in real time the places of nurseries and maternal assistants available.

A decree is expected to be issued specifying the creation of this service.

The information contained on this page remains current and will be modified as soon as the text enters into force.

The nurseries welcome children in their premises, under certain conditions (age of the child, prior application for registration...). Children are under the responsibility of qualified professionals. There are different types of establishments: group, family, parental, business.

Collective crèche

The group nursery can generally accommodate up to 60 children.

It is managed by a local authority (municipality, department services...) or by a private manager (for example, an association).

The nursery is placed under the control and supervision of the department of maternal and child protection (PMI).

The care of children is provided by a multidisciplinary team. It includes a director (nursery, doctor, educator of young children). It also includes professionals (including childcare assistants and early childhood educators). There is a professional for 5 children who do not walk and a professional for 8 children who walk.

Their mission is to ensure the health, safety, well-being and development of children in their care.

The institution shall contribute to their education in accordance with parental authority..

Times often correspond to office hours.

FYI : the mini-nursery has the same characteristics as a group nursery, but welcomes fewer children (usually up to 10).

Family nursery

The family nursery employs approved maternal assistants which take 1 to 4 children at home.

Once or twice a week, the maternal assistants and the children meet in the premises of the family nursery to promote the socialization of the children and their awakening.

Maternal assistants are supervised and accompanied professionally by the staff of the nursery (nursery nurse, doctor...).

The family nursery is run by a local authority (municipality, department services...) or by a private manager (for example, an association).

The nursery is under the control and supervision of the mother and child protection (PMI).

In a family nursery, the parents are not the employers of the maternal assistant.

This method of reception has the advantage of relieving parents of all the administrative formalities they have to carry out for the direct employment of a maternal assistant.

Parental nursery

The parental nursery can usually accommodate up to 25 children, on a regular and/or occasional basis.

The parental nursery is created and run by the parents themselves, under the control of the Maternal and Child Protection (PMI).

The care of children is provided by a multidisciplinary team. It includes a director (nursery, doctor, educator of young children). It also includes professionals (including childcare assistants and early childhood educators). There is a professional for 5 children who do not walk and a professional for 8 children who walk.

Parents sometimes take part in the reception of children. The form of participation depends on each institution.

Their mission is to ensure the health, safety, well-being and development of children in their care.

Please note : to open a kindergarten, you must obtain an authorization from the department (president of the departmental council), which takes the advice of the maternal and child protection services (PMI).

Nursery (or inter-company)

The company nursery welcomes the children of employees of companies or public institutions (administrations, hospitals...). It can also offer places to families in the neighborhood.

It can generally accommodate up to 60 children.

Children are cared for by qualified staff (e.g. childcare assistants, early childhood educators).

The nursery is usually located close to the company, sometimes even on its premises.

Reception hours are flexible to respond more easily to professional constraints.

To be admitted to a nursery, your child must meet the following 2 conditions:

  • Be between 2 months and 3 years
  • Be in good standing with respect to compulsory vaccination (unless otherwise indicated by a medical certificate).

Search for a nursery

To search for a nursery, you can use a remote service:

FYI : a number of guaranteed places shall be fixed per establishment for parents in social or professional integration. This number may not be less than one place per 20 seats.

Pre-registration before birth of child

Before the birth of your child, it is recommended to make a pre-registration in several crèches at the level of the municipality and the department.

You can also contact the person in charge of the establishment of your choice as soon as the pregnancy is confirmed.

Before making the pre-registration, please contact the following organizations:

  • Early childhood service of the town hall
  • Department Services
  • Head of the institution of your choice

This first contact allows you to obtain information about the registration and the list of documents to be provided to build the file.

Who shall I contact

Warning : some nurseries do not accept any pre-registration before 6e month of pregnancy.

You pay a financial contribution to the nursery that varies according to your resources and your family situation.

Child care expenses for children under 6 years of age are subject to a tax credit..
