Inter-line traffic: prolonged experimentation, except on Olympic-only lanes

Publié le 03 août 2021 - Mise à jour le 15 juillet 2024 - Directorate for Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)

The inter-queue traffic experiment for powered two-wheelers and three-wheelers, implemented in 2021, is being extended until September 15, as indicated in a July 8, 2024, order. However, it is suspended on roads with dedicated Olympic and Paralympic Games lanes in Île-de-France in order to ensure the safety of these vehicles.

Since August 2, 2021, inter-lane traffic (CIF) has been authorized on an experimental basis for powered two-wheelers and three-wheelers on highways and expressways, when traffic is heavy. This experiment was supposed to end on the 1er August 2024 and be reviewed.

An order of July 8, 2024, extends it until september 15, 2024.

The extension concerns all the axes concerned by the experiment, with the exception of roads with dedicated Olympic and Paralympic Games lanes in Île-de-France.

The Ministry of the Interior states that of these reserved lanesHowever, there will be a high level of traffic and a high level of shear on roads by high-capacity vehicles (athletes’ transport, official delegations, rescue and security vehicles, taxis, ambulances, public transport as part of a public service mission, accredited journalists).

The inter-file experiment is thus suspended on the JOP 2024 reserved lanes as of July 15.

Please note

The dedicated "Olympic and Paralympic" (VROP) lanes have been developed to ensure reliable travel times for accredited vehicles to access competition venues. The following vehicles are authorized to use these lanes:

  • vehicles accredited by the Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games;
  • public transport (excluding private transport);
  • taxis;
  • vehicles intended to facilitate the transport of persons with reduced mobility;
  • emergency and security services (including those of the Île-de-France Roads Directorate, DiRIF).

Any unauthorized vehicles traveling on these lanes will be liable to a fine of €135 and legal proceedings.

The principles of inter-line traffic

This experiment has been carried out for 3 years in 21 departments including: Bouches-du-Rhône, Haute-Garonne, Gironde, Hérault, Isère, Loire-Atlantique, Nord, Rhône (including the Lyon metropolis), Var, Alpes-Maritimes, Drôme, Vaucluse, Pyrénées-Orientales and the 8 departments of the Île-de-France region.

In the test areas the following conditions shall be met:

  • the practice is permitted on motorways and roads with two carriageways separated by a median and with at least two lanes each, where the maximum permitted speed is greater than or equal to 70 km/h;
  • traffic between queues of vehicles which are stationary or traveling at a very reduced speed is carried out on the two tracks, having the same direction of traffic, furthest to the left of a road;
  • the lateral space between vehicles traveling on the two most left-hand lanes of a carriageway must be sufficient;
  • inter-lane traffic shall be carried out at a speed of not more than 50 km/h, with a differential of 30 km/h compared to other vehicles;
  • none of the traffic lanes on the roadway are under construction or covered in snow or ice;
  • before traveling in inter-lanes, the driver shall inform other users of his intention;
  • two or three-wheeled power-driven vehicles must not force the passage;
  • prohibition of a vehicle in inter-lanes passing over another vehicle in inter-lanes;
  • when traffic becomes more fluid and the vehicles travel at more than 50 km/h on at least one of the 2 lanes, the two or three-wheeled motorized vehicles must resume their place in the lanes.

Failure to comply with these conditions shall be subject to 3-point indentation on the driving license and a flat-rate fine of €135.
