You settle in France and wonder if you can drive with your foreigners license? A driving license issued by a non-European country is valid for one year. If you want to be able to drive longer, you must exchange it for a French driver's license. Service-Public.fr provides you with a very simple simulator to know whether or not your country's driving license is exchangeable for a French license.

If you hold a driving license issued by a third country to the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA), you must exchange it for a French license, within one year of establishing your normal residence in France.

With one click, this simulator shows you the non-European states (EU/EE) whose driving licenses can be exchanged for a French license.

It's very simple, select the State in the search bar. Depending on the country indicated, the answer given is either:

  • Your driving license is exchangeable for a French license.
  • Your driving license is not exchangeable for a French license. You must take the driving license exam in France.

If you reside in France and have a permit obtained in a European State (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom before 2021), this permit is valid in France as long as it is valid.
